Mukuro's choice of weapon is the trident. Mukuro's trident allows him, when possessing others, to switch bodies with one pierce. The trident is also a tool that helps to create the illusions and open any one of the six paths. Other than that, I don't really know anything else about how his trident came to be - but it is important. There is still things to be told about this weapon in particular. In the Future arc, when TYL!Mukuro relays a message to Chrome, he does not appear to her, but a piece of the trident fork does.

In popular culture, the trident is a weapon of many deities such as Poseidon (Greek mythology) and Shiva (Hindu god). I don't know any real symbolism of the trident and I don't trust Wikipedia, so until I can find anything about it that's related to Mukuro's character, I can't make a clear relationship between Mukuro and tridents.
